The Nabel

The Nabel, as it’s name (‘the navel’) suggests is the central hub in the city center of Göttingen. It’s the point where Weenderstrasse, Theaterstrasse and Prinzenstrasse meet. From 1975, it was decorated with a plastic tree cake — a plastic column several meters high with a fountain. However, since the artwork was very vulnerable to damage, the city decided to replace it. Today, a bronze sculpture called "The Dance" can be found at the Nabel. Visit this lively square and take a slow stroll through the bustling city center of Göttingen.

The Gänseliesel fountain

The Gänseliesel fountain is one of the city’s main attractions. It stands in front of the old town hall in the center of Göttingen. The fountain figure dates back to 1901 and depicts a young girl surrounded by geese. The original figure from 1901 is now in the municipal museum. Gänseliesel is considered the most kissed girl in the world. Students used to come and visit her after enrollment and give her a kiss. A kissing ban was imposed in 1926, which was only lifted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary.

The two friends Wilhelm Busch and Erich Bachmann were the inspiration behind the stories.
