History and Beauty

Before you head off to explore the island, it's worth spending some time visiting Palma de Mallorca. Don't miss the atmospheric old town with its narrow streets, the Gothic-style Cathedral of Santa Maria which dominates the skyline, the unusual circular Bellver Castle to the west of the town centre, and the 11th century Arab Baths.

Once out of town drive up the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along the entire west side of the island, stopping off at some very pretty villages along the way. These include Soller, Fornalutx considered by many to be the prettiest village in Spain, and Puerto de Andratx with its glamorous yachts and upmarket shops.

Activities for Families

There are two water parks on the island, both within a 20-minute drive of Palma. Palma Aquarium, home to over 8,000 marine animals  is a fun and educational day out with the kids learning about the varieties of marine animals and their habitats.

On the other side of the island you can visit the spectacular Caves of Drach and the Caves of Arta. Young children may need to be carried as the tours involve a lot of walking and climbing of stairs, but it's well worth it to see the impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes. 

Best Beaches in Mallorca

Cala Llamp and Cala Marmassen are on the southwest coast, sandwiched between the sea and the cliffs. These coves are mainly rocky, so not ideal for families, but the water is crystal clear and great for snorkelling and other water sports. 

Families may prefer Cala S’Amarador, Cala Torta and Playa de S'Arenalet with golden sands and shallow water surrounded by nature and less crowded than the better-known beaches.

For beach clubs, sun loungers and food and drinks on tap, head to Alcúdia bay and its many beaches on the north coast .

Valldemossa :A charming village in the Tramuntana mountains known for its cobbled streets and the historic Monastery. 

Alcúdia : A medieval town  rich in history from its Roman ruins to its beautifully preserved Old Town. 

 Sóller : A scenic town surrounded by orange groves. Take the famous vintage tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller for a beautiful coastal experience.

1. As a general rule you give way to the right at intersections. On a roundabout, cars already on the roundabout have priority.

2. Speed limits are strictly enforced, so watch out for signs. 

3.  Many roads in Mallorca, especially in rural areas, can be narrow and winding. Drive carefully and be mindful of cyclists and pedestrians, particularly in the mountain villages.

4. Seatbelts must be worn both in the front and back seats. Children who are shorter than 135 cm (4 feet, 5 inches) must use an approved child seat or harness. If you need one, you can reserve and pay for your child car seat when you are booking your hire car.
