Place Stanislas

Place Stanislas was built between 1752 and 1755 and separates the Old Town from the New Town. It was the Duke of Lorraine, Stanislas Leszczynski, who in 1737 decided to establish this square to honor the French king, Louis XV. The square features a number of pavilions: the Town Hall, bearing both Stanislas’s and the city of Nancy’s coats of arms, the Grand Hôtel, the National Opera of Nancy and Lorraine, the Pavilion Jacquet and the Museum of Fine Arts. In addition to the pavilions, you can admire the six gates that connect the buildings, as well as a fountain and the Arc de Triomphe. Since 1831, a statue of Stanislas has stood in the center of the square, replacing the one of Louis XV which was destroyed during the Revolution. Place Stanislas is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Musée de l’Ecole de Nancy

The Ecole de Nancy was founded in 1901 as a provincial alliance of art industries specializing in Art Nouveau. For some sixty years, Emile Gallé, Louis Hestaux, Victor Prouvé and Camille Martin created and acquired numerous objects to present their collections to the public. The museum was officially opened to the public in 1964, in the home of Eugène Corbin, a patron of the movement. The collections include furniture, glass and ceramics (bowls, vases and lighting fixtures, as well as stained glass). Don’t forget to visit the beautiful garden, which is very well maintained by contemporary Nancy horticulturists. It includes a funerary monument, an aquarium, a statue of Louis Majorelle and an oak door from the Gallé workstores.

Château de Haroué

Located south of Nancy, Château des Beauvau-Craon, better known as Château de Haroué, dates to the 18th century. It was built on top of a Renaissance citadel and castle, thus creating a new structure. Built by architect Germain Boffrand between 1720 and 1732 for the noble Beauvau-Craon family, it was home to eight generations of the family, and is still owned by Princess Marie Isabelle Christina Adèle Gracie and her children, who live there today. The château has 365 windows, 52 chimneys, 12 towers and 4 bridges, which corresponds to the calendar year. Inside, visitors will appreciate the many works of art displayed in the various rooms (statues, tapestries and furniture) and, outside, two magnificent gardens.
